RESTORING THE OVERSEAS VOTE
Written by Ralph Ramkarran

This is an exceptionally emotive issue. It was infamously abused in elections of 1968 and 1973, restricted in 1980 and finally abolished for the 1985 elections. It was a major device for the rigging of elections with the objective of establishing one party, authoritarian rule. It helped to destroy Guyana’s economy and its good name. We sank into international shame and disrepute.

But the fact is that Guyanese residing abroad have a...

NARRATIVES

The recent, ongoing debate on narratives initiated by Ravi Dev in the Kaieteur News, is a refreshing departure from the traditional accusatory posture that defines political analysis.

Narratives are stories. Some are based on history or on a person’s interpretation of history. In this context the stories might be true or false. They can become accepted and their negative connotations magnified by a large segment of the population...

The contribution of the Working Peoples’ Alliance and Walter Rodney to the political development of Guyana is under discussion in the letter pages of the newspapers. Unfortunately in much of the emotionally charged comments, facts tend to take second place. I wish to add my two cents worth but I can only do so from the prism (not ‘prison’) of the PPP because it was through the PPP that I perceived and understood the WPA. I cannot claim...

MAJOR STEPS FORWARD – MUCH MORE TO BE DONE

The President’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) finally captured full national support with the conclusion of the debate in the National Assembly. The debate was the culmination of a country wide consultation process which involved the entire spectrum of society but, most importantly, the Amerindian people.

The debate came at a time when the United Nations Climate Change...

The season of goodwill consists of Christmas and New Year. In Guyana, Guyanese of all religious persuasions seize the opportunity of participating in the delights that the season has to offer. They undertake religious activities at Christmas and enjoy the fanfare of welcoming the New Year. In this period Christians generally take the opportunity of reaffirming their faith, to give thanks and to celebrate the life and work of Jesus...

LIGHT PRISON SENTENCES ARE NOTHING BUT A SCANDAL
Written by Ralph Ramkarran
Thursday, 26 November 2009 09:05
Our society places little value on human life.

The newspapers reported on November 17, 2009, that seven year prison sentences were imposed on two persons for manslaughter. Mahendra Singh lived in the same yard as his uncle, Ganesh Rai. He was drinking at Rai’s house. There was a mild altercation and Rai asked Singh to leave. Singh went to his house, got a cutlass and chopped his uncle to death. He was charged for murder, pleaded guilty...
